What to look for in a Shih Tzu breeder?

Getting your pet from a reputable source is the primary responsibility of being a good pet owner. To be assured that the pup you are going to welcome into your home is healthy, you must know how to assess the initial home where the pooch is coming from. It may start off from referral of friends, a shelter or veterinarian’s friend; but wherever you may plan to acquire your little Shih Tzu, there are some things you must keep in mind that you need to check.

What to look for in a Shih Tzu breeder?
First, check if the breeder is knowledgeable about the Shih Tzu history, behavior, common ailments and grooming information. Another good sign is when he asks you about your home, your family and the way you treat your pets. The more questions he asks about you and your life, the better it is. This is an indication that he is more interested in the welfare of the puppy more than the dollars he can earn. Also take note if he is citing references – especially if it is veterinary information related. This may be organizations or canine associations that he may be a member of. Furthermore, ask about the attending veterinarian of the dam or sire of the pup you’re interested to get. You can also interview this vet to obtain more confidence and trust in the breeder. Aside from these good hints, you should also ask some questions like the experience of the breeder, lineage and health of the dam and sire (until to the grandparents, if possible), and what are the terms when you may need to refund the puppy. Do not underestimate these questions because they do become a problem especially when the puppy exhibited genetic illnesses. Most common genetic problems in the Shih Tzu are hernia (commonly due to inbreeding), excessive bulging of the eyes leading to drying and conjunctivitis, juvenile cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy and intervertebral disk disease.
It is important that you are comfortable with your breeder and you are confident with the quality of pup you are getting. Ask, negotiate and be honest. This way, you are insured of a good dog that won’t give you major problems in the future.
