Natural Remedies for Shih Tzu Skin

Skin problems can occur suddenly on dogs and usually caused by allergic reactions and irritation. This may start as a little red nodule or skin flaking accompanied by frequent scratching or rolling on the floor. Once you see this in you Shih Tzu, it is important to take note of the occurrence to be able to pinpoint the possible causes. Though it is always best to let your pooch see a vet, if there are instances where you are not available for a consultation, there are home remedies that you can prepare to help you pet lessen the irritation and use as a first aid treatment.
For allergies and instant inflammatory reactions, mix ¼ tablespoon of Epsom salt, 1 teaspoon of dried sage leaves, and one teaspoon of thyme in one quart boiling water. You can also add your choice of dog shampoo in the mixture and apply it on the skin. Your Shih Tzu will definitely have a soothing feeling all over the affected skin and will make him or her relax and stop scratching. On the other hand, if ever there is formation of pus and exudates on the skin, you can add hydrogen peroxide – of about ¼ cup to the shampoo of your dog and apply it all over the body. This will prevent any bacterial proliferation on the wound and will eventually dry the moisture that serves as medium for growth. Should you observe any parasites such as ticks, lice and mites, you can give your Shih tzu garlic capsules and apply topical agents such as wormwood, lemongrass and tincture of Agrimony. The smell of these substances can drive away the insects and prevent them from laying eggs and biting the superficial surface of the skin.
These treatments may look simple but they can be effective especially if they are used consistently and if you observe the skin lesions at the early stage. But once you see wounds and too much pus production, it is time to bring your pet to the vet because that level of infection already needs antibiotic intervention and special topical medications.
