Protecting Your Shih Tzu This Winter

December may indicate the holiday cheer and yuletide feel; but this also means one thing: winter is coming and we should brace ourselves for the cold. It is truly fun to wallow on the snow and go ice skating; but we should be prepared for the impending low temperature to be able to make the most out of our Christmas vacation. This is also the same for our Shih Tzu pets. We should prepare them for the winter chill.
The Shih Tzu breed is initially bred in Tibet and China where the weather is pretty cold and they can actually handle the sub zero temperature. However, just like us humans, if exposed for longer periods in the snow, their toes and skin can get dry and lead to cracking and infection. Bring along a towel during walks and make sure to towel off the moisture and crystals that stick to the hair. It is also better to cut the hair of your dog a bit shorter than usual. Avoid bathing you pooch more than once a week, if applicable because shampoos and conditioner tend to wash off the natural oils of the skin that function as protection from dryness and flaking. Furthermore, the salt and ice-melting chemicals added to the snow can affect the paw pads and can cause wounds and irritation. To prevent this, put your Shih Tzu in boots – that can also double his or her cuteness, or put petroleum jelly on the fingers and toes. This will provide extra protection against harmful chemicals and the sub zero temp. Also brush the hair regularly to stimulate blood circulation throughout the body. This will add to the body heat production and help maintain a normal body temperature. Also, make sure to provide water at all times to avoid dehydration due to coldness. Adding more food than usual is also recommended because high food means high heat stock.
And last but definitely not the least: If you feel cold and cannot tolerate the cold, then it is most probably the same for your Shih Tzu. Always keep your pet close and keep him or her warm.
