Each species has its own way of communicating with one another. This is a learned ability that all higher living things has acquired and is part of adaptation to the environment. Speaking and communication is a very important factor in survival especially in the wild. Also, part of the ‘survival of the fittest’ game is the interaction between different species.
This includes the dog and man relationship. We may not use the same communication ways; but we have to adapt and understand one another because dogs are considered as family in our society. So if you have a Shih Tzu and you would want to decipher all the canine sound he makes, would you be able to react the way your dog expects you to? Here are some hints to take note of.
Barking may hear the same for us, but there is a major difference between a bark in a low tone versus a high tone. Low tone barks mean warning to a danger or a sign that there is something out of the ordinary in your Shih Tzu’s environment and he is letting you know what he observes. The high tone one, on the other hand means that he wants you to take notice of him because he needs to tell you something. Shih tzu, the attention grabbing pooches are experts when it comes to getting your attention so expect a lot of high tones barks from them. Howling and whining are two different things. Howling is talking to another dog while whining means discomfort and distress. It is very important to learn to differentiate these two to be able to understand your pet’s mood. Growling, on the other hand, not only means warning but it also shows aggressiveness. Once your dog growls, back off. He is telling you that, “Do not dare to cross my boundaries because I am ready to get my teeth on your skin!” This is usually accompanied by teeth snapping to add more intimidation. Yelping is also a different thing. This is their “OUCH!” and their version of crying. This is a sign of pain and you might need to check on your dog if this happens. This is usually heard during accidents and alarming situations.
There are many ways to understand your Shih Tzu. The only key is experience and to allot time in getting to know you four legged furball’s personality.
