Shih Tzu Hair Dye

Shih Tzu’s long manes are no doubt these dogs’ main attractive feature making them as one of the top pet breeds of all time. They are small – easy to carry and possess endearing personalities. Owners would always want to show them off; and indeed, everyone would surely agree that they are beautiful canines. In order to maintain the beauty of this breed, Shih Tzu need frequent brushing and regular trips to the groomer. Their lengthy hair may be gorgeous to look at; but at the same time it needs some attention and maintenance.
One of the innovations today that is starting to get attention in the pet industry is dye-ing the hair of dogs, Shih Tzu in particular. Colored coats are more vibrant-looking in long-haired breeds that’s why Shih Tzu are common to get tinted hair. Human hair dyes must never be used on Shih Tzu or on any dog. Even if both humans and Shih Tzu have hair (not fur), the skin pH is still far different. Doing this may cause allergic reactions on the skin such as reddening, patching or dandruff production. In dyeing Shih Tzu hair, vegetable coloring, KoolAid or a combination of both are used. It is not advisable that you color your dog’s hair at home – especially when you still lack the experience in using and dealing with these substitute hair products. One drop into the eye can lead to irritation, inflammation or ulceration. You may need to visit a professional groomer – preferably trained with hair coloring, to be able to avoid complications. Moreover, make sure that your Shih Tzu’s skin condition is at its finest condition – no wounds, dry skin or hair loss. These chemical substances can get into the deeper layers of the skin and can lead to infection.
If you are planning to “paint” your pooch for a total make over, it is best to consult with your veterinarian beforehand. This is important because these hair coloring products are not backed up with scientific studies especially on their long term effects. These are not specially formulated for dogs. It is with your own discretion should you decide to give your Shih Tzu a new pumped up look. However, so far, there no known reported severe reactions to both vegetable coloring or KoolAid products on dogs.
