There are many facial expressions that our dog can show. As their owners, it is important that we know how to read their moods because this is the only way we can assess what they need from us. In order to properly comprehend what our pets are saying, experience and a little bit of research will help us. There are certain body languages and sounds that dogs do that show pain, anxiety or stress. There are also expressions that show contentment, relaxation and happiness. Being able to differentiate good and bad feelings can greatly help us in handling our pets properly.
But how about if you see your dog flashing his pearly whites on you with matching squinting of the eyes? You know this is not a normal doggy expression. Dogs do not really smile. Smiling is a human expression seen when we are happy or when we try to greet somebody. However, when dogs smile – it is entirely a different story. In this hilarious video, a Shih Tzu pup seems to know how to beam at the camera like a human. Every-time his owner tries to touch his hand or cheek, the dog immediately reacts by pulling his cheeks up into a smile. Everybody seems as thrilled while watching the pooch show off his adorable smirk.
Dogs can be trained to smile. This may not be an innate expression of their faces but they can be taught how to flash a beam. This may start as an initiation when food is about to be given where the dog will try to open his mouth. Midway between fully opening the mouth and the upward movement of the cheek, a dog can look like as if he is smiling. Through positive reinforcement and a lot of praise, the dog can get the idea that making this expression is wanted from him so he will keep on doing this under the same circumstances.
Aside from tricks and dancing, you can also teach your pooch how to show off a grin. This will surely add an extra appeal to your charming little pet.
